Lockdown, a speechless post, and poll result
Hello Subscribers, This is the second newsletter this year, and I don’t have so much to report. Vienna is still in lockdown, so I hardly ever leave the house. And since my wife is still off work until Thursday, we are allowing ourselves a bit of a lazy time, before serious work resumes. I had already sent the finished, reworked introduction texts to the publishers of my book, and in a couple of weeks I should be given the edited proofs for a final check, for which I will have just one week, so that will most likely mean some long hours again. After that I can go back to writing long overdue updates for my website and closing some significant gaps. As for the blog, there was only one short post this week, on Thursday: other than the photo reproduced above, showing the Capitol in Washington DC – from a safe distance – it came only with that brief photo description and the headline “speechless”. That’s because Wednesday’s news coverage of the breaking into and ransacking of the Capitol, the inner sanctum of the most powerful nation on Earth, did indeed leave me speechless. I couldn’t find any words. Yet despite me adding “no comments today” in the post, I later did post a little comment, with a quote from the last previous Republican US president, George W. Bush, condemning what he referred to as an “insurrection”. (You can read his full statement here – he had more to say than the short snippet I quoted in the blog post comment – possibly the wisest words I have read by the 43rd POTUS in a long while, if not ever.) So 2021 has already got off to quite a dark start, on more than one front. Finally, the poll result: it was a draw, namely between ‘DT & spheres’ and ‘DT & lakes’ … so instead of tossing a coin or something I’ve decided to give you both of these two themes, one after the other, beginning with spheres this coming week. ‘DT & ash’ didn’t get any votes this time, so it will be out for a long while, but ‘DT & flames’, which was only narrowly behind the two winners, may be given yet another chance later in the year. Before that I will set up a couple of polls with all-new themes to choose from. That’s it for today. Stay safe! Best, Peter
