New Year, New Poll
Hello subscribers – and a Happy New Year! Let’s trust that 2021 can only be better than 2020 was (at least for many of us). In this past week I posted another special themed post, following the model of DT & Christmas the week before, but this time it was DT & New Year’s Eves. Again it featured a series of photos from my archives, all taken during my travels on a New Year’s Eve, from the Falkland Islands to Montserrat, and from India to Venezuela. In addition I included three photos taken here in Vienna of the fireworks display at Prater (where Vienna’s famous historic Ferris wheel is) on New Year’s Eve 2012 – and the photo above was one of those. And earlier today I uploaded another post to mark the 60th anniversary of one of the least well known nuclear accidents in history, and the only one on US soil to have directly caused fatalities, namely the three operators of the experimental SL-1 reactor which blew up in a steam explosion after an erroneous extraction of the central control rod causing a reactor meltdown. This in turn necessitated a lengthy clean-up operation. The site where the reactor remains were buried in the ground is still off limits today. In the last newsletter of 2020 I also promised a new poll. Here we go now. Please vote for one of the following themes for a post in the near future. All candidates have (unsuccessfully) featured in different polls in 2020 and are given another chance here: a) dark tourism & flames b) dark tourism & ash c) dark tourism & spheres d) dark tourism & lakes Please cast your vote by either replying to this newsletter or by leaving a comment on the blog post itself stating your choice. I’m intrigued which one will make it this time. (Btw. in the next poll I’ll field only new themes.)
